To compete with Bing’s tabbing and Google Universal Search and Instant Answers, Yahoo are rolling out the Accordion – featuring pages of differing rich content pulled from the various aspects of the Yahoo portal.
The above screenshot shows the Yahoo accordion in action – flicking between Videos and Albums. It can also include Twitter feeds, an Overview page with photos and latest news stories, upcoming concerts in Events. The Twitter content can also be grouped into normal people, celebs and insiders which can be useful for researchers!
So you get the usual organic results, plus content pulled in from Images, videos, live Twitter updates and blogs, News and at the very bottom also trending (never seen that one before!)
Pulling in some content and also sectioning out results – US Bing is also using new tab-like features for the most popular searches, e.g. lyrics.
Yahoo’s search format is more impactful, using their Purple and whilst Bing and Google are focusing on search results, Yahoo’s page looks more like their portal home page – boxed segments. Rather than splurging all different types of information and content onto one page (Google), Yahoo has it organized into tabs which is likely to be more appealing to most searchers.
