How Annoying is the Google Arrow Keyboard Navigation?

I am not impressed with Google Instants keyboard navigation function blue arrow.

  • If you search for something and hit enter it sometimes automatically thinks you have hit enter on the top result and takes you through to it as the arrow is on it – how annoying!
  • If you are used to scrolling up and down results pages with the keyboard arrows keys, this will no longer work as instead the blue arrow moves between results
  • The arrow also occurs in Google News – again, disrupting the scrolling
  • The arrow does not point at Google Adwords ads site links, but does point at the new additional links to sites (not the natural site links either):

So it will skip between the 2 headlines of the Adwords ads and not go onto the site links, and then to the hilton natural link headline and then to ‘Offers & Packages’, ‘Careers’ and ‘Search Hotels – Hilton’. From there it will not go to the site links but to the next organic results (www1.hilton.com).

One positive – the arrow only occurs when signed in to Google and when Google Instant is enabled – so switches off with Google Instant or if signed out.

  1. I’m really sitting on a fence when it comes to whether I like Google Instant or not. It has its advantages and disadvantages. I think it definitely has potential though. I have to admit that I was very annoyed with the navigation arrows at first too, but I think I’m starting to get used to it and I think I may even grow to like it eventually.
